10,000 Miles by Raine_Szmanda1 [Reviews - 5]

Greg sat dumbfounded for hours after Warrick left him sitting on his couch—He could not fathom what hurt more, Nick having the nerve to show up in his life again, or the fact that he was engaged to a woman. The dreams of a life they could have had were bad enough—he really didn’t need to have the guy stuck in his face all of the time. He wanted to get angry with Nick, but he decided that getting even was easier on his blood pressure. His hands were balled into fists by the time he made it to his bed room to go to sleep, after waking up from a nightmare he sat in the middle of his bed trying to get his breathing back in order. He felt anger boil up inside of him and he started throwing things around his room and started ripping his posters off the wall—after realizing how childish he had been he stood there and laughed at the mess around him.

After Greg had finished cleaning up the mess of his bedroom he collapsed on his bed and set his alarm clock for 5:00pm so he could get up early enough to get some things done and escape to his lab before anyone else was there to irritate the hell out of him—when 5:00 rolled around Greg actually woke up with a smile on his face, he went shopping and went to a salon to get his hair styled and died, when he looked at his watch after his hair was done he saw that he had about 60 minutes left before he was late by his own standards for work. He arrived back at his house and got shaved and dressed and arrived at work with 20 minutes to spare and started to brew some coffee.

It was a very slow night so not many people had much for Greg to do so he was surfing the internet looking for anything that would cause for some type of entertainment—he looked up hopefully when he heard the door swing open but his face turned into a scowl when he saw who was standing there looking at him.

“What do you want? ”

“I’m here because Warrick dropped off some samples earlier and he’s currently detained so I had to come and get them.”

“Oh well in that case.”

Greg handed Nick over the results without another word, he went back to his internet surfing and Nick just stood there awkwardly trying to think of something to say.

“Why are you still in my lab?”

“No reason really, I guess I just thought we could talk?”

“There’s nothing to talk about Nick, I have nothing to say to you.”

“I like your hair”

“Thanks, I just got it done today—got a date tonight so I thought I should look impressive.”

Nick just nodded and backed out of the lab not saying much else, Greg felt a pang of guilt surge through him—He didn’t really have a date but he wanted to hurt Nick—even if it was only slightly. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t notice his door open until Sara was in his face. He jumped and she giggled quietly which caused him to blush.

“Hey Sara, to what do I owe this pleasure?”

“We’re all going out to the bar tonight, were trying to get to know Nick, you know the new CSI?”

“Oh, Well count me out Sara, I’m awfully tired and I just think I wanna go home and crash tonight”

“Oh come on Greggo you never come out with us—Please”

The whine was all it took for Greg to give in, he nodded and she skipped out of the lab—Greg rolled his eyes and looked up at the clock wishing it wasn’t so close to the end of shift.

It took a lot out of Greg not to bail on all of them, he took his time styling his hair, he took his time putting on his new clothes and he took his time putting on eye liner that he hadn’t worn since high school, he smiled at his weary self in the mirror as he pulled his black sweater closer to his body.

He arrived at the bar and realized how old he had gotten when the loud noise actually began to give him a headache, he winced when he saw all of his friends over at the bar laughing and joking with Nick. He admired Nick from a distance, he looked different—much older than he had last remembered him, he had a harder look to him and his eyes didn’t quite reach his eyes when he smiled anymore. ‘Good’ Greg thought, maybe he’s just as miserable as I am.

He slowly walked over towards them and Nick turned and smiled at him.

“Hey G. What happened to your date?”

“I cancelled it because Sara begged me to come out with her, so I agreed. “

Warrick turned to Nick and elbowed him.

“So Nicky, when do we get to meet this fiancé of yours?”

“She should be here soon”

And speak of the devil as soon as his mouth had opened a petit girl was standing beside Nick, she grabbed his hand and kissed him on the cheek.

“Sorry I am late”

“No problem—Guys I’d like you to meet my fiancé River.”

Greg putting on his best fake smile, offered the woman his hand, she looked him up and down and then up again—her eyes glinted and finally she let go of his hand.”

“It’s a pleasure to meat you—“

She paused not knowing his name as he hadn’t offered it to her.

“I’m Greg.”

And without another word Greg turned his back on her and asked Sara if she’d like to dance, River looked a little miffed at how rude Greg had seemed. Warrick just glared sideways at Nick and sent a withering glance in the direction of Greg. He was torn between his two best friends and he couldn’t wait until he could corner Nick and ask him what the hell was up.

Sara and Greg were broken out of their dancing when a guy walked up to the both of them. Greg’s eyes widened and almost automatically he was hugging the guy and patting him on the back.

“Dennis? I thought you had moved back to California?”

“Well I had, but I came back for a job interview, I think it’s actually gonna work out for me here.”

“Shit man it’s been two years but you haven’t changed your looks in the least.”

“I guess I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Sara backed away and grinned.

“I’ll give you two some time to talk—you know catch up”

She gave Greg the thumbs up and Dennis took Sara’s place and they began to dance.

“Who’s that guy?”

Nick pointed to the guy who currently had Greg in his arms.

“That’s Dennis, Greg’s ex-boyfriend, they broke up because Greg was afraid of a long distance relationship, but man if you could have seen them together—it was like when they were together no one else existed. I’ve never seen two people more in love, it’s a shame that they had to break up—but now that Dennis is back you never know.”

Sara explained Dennis to Nick oblivious to the pain that was etched across his face. Warrick wanted to comfort him but a part of him felt like Nick deserved it, but then his loyalty kicked in and he distracted Nick but wasn’t able to for long because River spoke up.

“So you’re telling me that Greg is a fag?”

“Uh yeah, but homosexual is a better word you could use thanks?”

Catherine glared at the woman who was glaring in the direction of Greg.

“I can’t believe you hang out with gay people Nicky, how about we go home now.”

Warrick’s mouth dropped open and Catherine wanted to smack River for her closed mindedness. Nick lowered his head and dragged the woman out of the bar and he couldn’t help but hear the nice words Catherine had to say to their backs.

When Greg and Dennis made their way over to the bar Catherine had cooled down a little bit and was being held gently by Warrick. Greg took one look at her and knew she was upset and asked her what was wrong.

“Nick’s fiancé is a homophobic bitch and I wanted to smack her silly.”

Greg stared at her for a few mintues and all he could do was laugh, he laughed so hard that tears sprang to his eyes and started spilling down over his cheeks—Sara went to his side and looked at him funny.

“Greg? What is so funny, usually you take offence to people insulting your sexuality”

“Oh if that bitch only knew the truth.”

“The truth about what G?”

“Oh nothing important really--just that her fiancé Nick is my ex-boyfriend.”

The confusion that was in everyone’s eyes made Greg giddy inside and made him feel like he was slightly drunk.

“Oops—he probably didn’t want ya’ll to know that either.”

And then he fell into fits of laughter again, feeling better than he had in a very long time.
